Luke MacNeil is a singer and acoustic guitarist based in Alpine, Texas, known for a gravelly baritone and a percussive, heavy-handed style — he raps the beat out on the body of the guitar, a self-taught approach born of playing without a drummer and rooted in the country songs his father and uncles played when he was young.
What sets Luke apart is what he refuses to play. As a rule, he steers clear of the popular bar-song covers most rooms expect — the crowd-pleasers you hear everywhere. Instead he builds his sets from two sources: his own songs, and the great, overlooked work of little-known writers he believes the world should hear. He's especially drawn to murder ballads and to songs of exceptional craft, inhabiting each one as if he'd written it himself.
That instinct runs through his recordings. Across Here's One for Sanity (2006), Under Covers (2006), and These Are Good Songs (2014), he mixes originals with carefully chosen covers of writers he admires — among them Tom Waits, Tom House, Peter Mulvey, Martin Sexton, and Jeffrey Foucault.
MacNeil cut his teeth on the Boston folk circuit in 2006–2007, playing Club Passim, the Abbey Lounge, and the streets of Davis Square, and studied under Steve Rapson, author of The Art of the Soloperformer: A Field Guide to Stage & Podium. He has performed across the country in the years since, including a long-running residency at the Rose Room Revue in Upton, Massachusetts, where the Milford Daily News found him "singing in a gravelly voice about losers, lovers and lost souls." He looks for songs about real people living real lives, and plays them for audiences who really listen.
